Prealgebra: A Journey to College Mathematics
About This Book
Prealgebra: A Journey to College Mathematics by Cavanah and McKeague uses one of the principal approaches to the pre-algebra curriculum in which negative numbers and solving equations are introduced early on in the course. Algebraic concepts such as evaluating expressions and solving equations are then infused in subsequent chapters to reinforce these fundamental skills. The authors use a conversational tone and a learner-centered approach to instruction. They draw on their experience teaching in the face-to-face and online learning environments to incorporate points of clarification or emphasis as well as common mistakes that are often made when learning and mastering this material. The title reflects the fact that many students taking this course are beginning a sequence of mathematics courses. The completion of these classes is a journey, complete with both its challenges and triumphs.
Features such as the Navigation Skills and Spotlight on Success, supplement the curriculum with advice and pointers for success that will transcend not only a prealgebra course, but also the mathematics classroom. In addition to a variety of carefully worked out examples within the text, conceptual questions in the Key Concept Review and an assortment of exercises, students can also quickly and easily access the MathTV video library with a quick scan of a QR code in each section.
More Than Just a Textbook
Each of our textbooks is more than just a book. We built them each to be the hub of a math "toolbox" of sorts. While most students still prefer to use the printed book in their studies, the eBook extends the reach of the book, giving students and instructors access to a wide array of supporting tools:
The eBook looks crisp on screen and on any device with a browser and Internet connection.
It also includes free access to 10,000 MathTV videos, with 3-4 tutorials for every single example.
Students also get all of the accompanying worksheets and digital supplements for the book.
QR code technology connects the printed textbook directly to the digital resources through the students smartphones and tablets.

Progress Check (eBook only)
This self-study feature allows students to get as much practice as they want on the examples in the book. Each Practice Example correlates with the examples from each section of the eBook. The system automatically generates new problems, so students can do each one of them until they feel confident that they understand it.
A quick road map for each section to help students identify and focus on the important concepts and increase the likelihood of their success.
Key Concept Review
At the end of each section you will find conceptual questions, these open-ended problems encompass the key concepts of the section
Learning Objectives Assessments
A short section of multiple-choice questions at the end of every exercise set to test whether students have met the learning objectives for each section.
Landmark Review: Checking Your Progress
This feature is intended to capture key concepts that have already been covered in the chapter.
How To Segments
Many sections include a “How To” or “Summary” segment that outlines the steps in the method or process used to solve certain types of problems.
Spotlight on Success
Each student has a unique approach to learning, so this feature offers students a variety of strategies from a variety of sources.
From our experience, we have found that students do better in their math course when they see an application to real-world problems
Facts from Geometry
Geometry can give students another view of the problem, and potentially, another avenue for understanding algebraic concepts.
Some include study strategies while others are more reflective, helping students reframe their mindset for success.
Lists the main properties and definitions found in the chapter, with examples given in the margin.
